In a remarkable initiative that champions the innovative spirit of Indian researchers, leading science and technology firm Merck has announced its third Merck Young Scientist Award for 2023. The prestigious accolade celebrates the diligent research efforts of young academics whose groundbreaking contributions are transforming lives across the country.
With the application window open until August 16, 2023, the competition is heating up. This year, Merck is set to honour ten dedicated researchers for their distinguished contributions to the scientific community.
Those eligible for the 2023 Merck Young Scientist Award must have less than ten years of post-doctoral research experience and be currently residing in India. The crowning ceremony will take place on November 24, 2023, where the winners will be announced.
The award features three diverse categories: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and a newly introduced Sustainability Research category. This special category seeks to honour researchers dedicated to green chemistry, renewable or alternative energy, sustainable materials and manufacturing.
In a departure from previous years, the award will recognise ten winners: two each in biological and chemical sciences, one in sustainability research, and five runner-up recipients. Winners can look forward to a prize of INR 350,000, with the runners-up receiving INR 100,000.
Mr Dhananjay Singh, Head of Science and Lab Solutions at Merck Life Science, underlined the growing importance of sustainability in scientific research. He expressed excitement about the unique research contributions expected from this year’s participants.
The entries will be judged by a distinguished panel, chaired by Dr Anurag Agrawal of Ashoka University, Dr Radha Rangarajan of CSIR-CDRI, and Dr Srinivas Reddy of CSIR-IICT. These esteemed individuals will be supported by a panel of ten respected researchers from various institutes.
