Generic representation of the coronavirus

In a notable development, Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central has provided substantial relief to patients suffering from Long COVID and associated hip joint issues. Among the various lingering effects of COVID-19, Long COVID is increasingly becoming a concern for healthcare professionals.

One of the significant sequelae associated with Long COVID is Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip. AVN occurs due to the temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the femoral head, which is a crucial component of the hip joint. When deprived of blood, the bone tissue undergoes necrosis or death, leading to the collapse and flattening of the femoral head.

Wockhardt Hospitals have reported an influx of AVN cases in the post-COVID-19 period. This included patients like Mr. Dhananjay Vasant Wagaskar and Ms. Ragini Yadav, who had to rely on walking aids due to severe pain in their hip joints. After undergoing MRI scans, both were diagnosed with AVN of the hip.

Dr. Mudit Khanna, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis. According to Dr. Khanna, early stages of AVN might not be evident in X-rays, making diagnosis and treatment a challenge. However, with a thorough clinical examination and MRI scans, the condition can be identified sooner.

At Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, a majority of the patients, including Mr. Wagaskar and Ms. Yadav, underwent successful Total Hip Replacement Surgery. This surgery replaced their damaged hip joints with artificial joints made from ceramic bearings. The patients reported a rapid recovery, without the need for walking aids, and were able to resume their daily activities with ease.

This development is an indicator of how advancements in surgical techniques and materials can significantly enhance patients’ quality of life, especially those grappling with the repercussions of COVID-19.
