Cosmetic Surgery is a relatively newer field in India. It evolved in the 1990s, but in the last decade the incidence of cosmetic surgery has been growing exponentially in India. Amongst the cases performed in India, before the pandemic started, majority of the cosmetic surgery patients would be from foreign countries, coming to India for medical tourism. The pandemic has shown an increasing trend of intrigue regarding Cosmetic Surgery in the domestic population particularly in the millennial generation.

There is abundance of information over the internet. The younger generation has thus become more aware of its choices. Earlier cosmetic surgery was thought to be done by people who were celebrities or those in show business. But of late, it has become accessible to one and all.

Self-awareness has increased thanks to increased online presence and video calls. Hence the focus on one’s physical and mental well-being has increased tremendously. Due to the possibility of working from the comfort of one’s home or even a remote location, the downtime associated with any cosmetic surgery hardly interferes with anyone’s work schedule.

Work from Home has thus provided a unique opportunity for people who wish to undergo cosmetic surgery. There has been a 30 to 40 percent increase in the consultations related to Cosmetic Surgery over the last one year.

The demographic profile of this cohort belongs to the age group from 25 to 45 years of age. They are working professionals living a healthy and active lifestyle. Contrary to popular belief that only women undergo cosmetic surgery, both men and women are equally interested in these procedures.

Commonly requested procedures pertain to either body contouring procedures like Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Arm lift, Breast Reduction, Breast Augmentation and so on or facial rejuvenation procedures like Rhinoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Jawline contouring, Neck Rejuvenation or even simple procedures like scar revision and acne marks treatment.

Most of these surgeries can be performed on daycare basis. The post-operative swelling and bruising can be easily concealed with masks. Thus, long-term solutions can be achieved with minimal inconvenience. As the myths and misconceptions surrounding cosmetic surgery are being dispelled with validated and evidence-based information, cosmetic surgery is finally getting wider acceptance in society.
